The Tahoe Endurance Training Philosophy

It should be fun.

What's the point of the athletic journey if it isn't enjoyable? It has to be fun. Even hard-intensity (interval) days need to have some level of enjoyment, whether it’s feeling like you achieved something by pushing your limits or being pushed by teammates, that feeling of accomplishment is enjoyable.

Our training formula.

Our training model is simple: How do you get good at something? By doing it! There are no secrets in that statement. If you don’t like doing something, it becomes impossible to do it all the time. Enjoyment in the sport has to be balanced with the pressure to perform to have long-term success.

We are a team.

What happens when a group of like-minded athletes with big goals come together? They build off each other to turn their dreams into reality. A teammate doing everything to the best of their ability will push you to do your best. The better you do, the more they will push themselves. It’s a circle of reciprocity that unlocks everyone’s true potential.

We think long-term.

Our focus isn't on creating one-year wonders, we want our athletes to aim for the stars and become lifelong lovers of the sport. If they are still happily competing at 25 or 30 years old, then we consider that a fantastic success. An athlete's race career should never be defined by their junior years. We have our athletes think of their careers as athletic journeys spanning decades.

The right training.

Our training model is very individualized in regards to the amount of training done by each athlete while being generalized with what type of training gets done. We believe an athlete should train as much as they can physically and mentally absorb. Once physical and/or mental performance begins to decline, that is when we know training needs to get pulled back to allow the athlete the ability to continue absorbing it.

Train to race.

Many teams and athletes train and inevitably get good at training. We train to get good at racing. We discuss with the athletes exactly WHY we do something so they understand that training’s application for racing. Interval training is used to create race-like fatigue, helping athletes get used to the tiredness they'll feel in real races. This way, they learn how to push through exhaustion mentally and physically and understand how to find effective strategies to gain an edge. Every training session has a direct application to racing performance and enjoying the sport.

NEWS

  • "The Certification process not only recognizes club excellence, but also gives a clear roadmap for all clubs to become stronger organizations,” said Ellen Adams, U.S. Ski & Snowboard Club Development Manager. "This is a strategic part of U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s plans to support clubs, be a more club-based organization and better understand the challenges and opportunities that exist for clubs in every corner of the country. The process to achieve Podium Level Certification requires a commitment to excellence on behalf of a club and its constituents, and clubs have reported finding great value in doing the work necessary to complete the certification. Many clubs have found that the most positive impact was not necessarily the certification designation, but, rather, in uncovering the true opportunities they have to improve and continue to deliver sustained excellence. These clubs all set great examples, and are leading the charge for club improvement nationally."

Sophie Goldschmidt, U.S. Ski & Snowboard President and CEO, added that, "Working in close partnership with our member clubs to recognize excellence and create a platform for continued improvement is a priority for our organization. Our clubs are our sport’s biggest asset to athlete recruitment, development and retention, and working hand-in-hand with them will enhance their levels of achievement and will transform the performance of our athletes and teams at all levels."
